How AMMLA operates ship services
In keeping with its charter, AMMLA organizes books,
paperbacks and magazines into "sea-going libararies" representing
a variety of reading tastes for the educational and self-help needs of seafarers. Shipboard libraries are then placed
on board US flag merchant ships, NOAA, US Coast Guard, and MSC vessels.
Seagoing libraries are distributed to the ships through six permanent port
branches in Seattle; San Francisco; New Orleans; New York; Port Arthur,
Texas; and Sault Ste. Marie on the Great Lakes.
Since 1981, AMMLA has operated a direct library service. Libraries are mailed to shipping companies (or their representatives) for distribution to those vessels which do not call into AMMLA ports. In order to receive this service, ships' master send a written request to AMMLA headquarters.
